What’s in a plan?

In my last year of University, I took an entrepreneuring for engineers course. This course involved us creating mock companies, and generating business plans for these companies, etc. One of our assignments required us to generate a 7 year financial plan. I remember thinking that this was crazy. How could I possibly know what the world was going to be like in that time frame. The world is changing at an exponential rate, and it is far too unpredictable to generate numbers that can be banked on. I understand that having a long term plan shows that the company has thought about the future and planned for SOME of the many possible scenarios, but I still think it is a shot in the dark.

I read a Slashdot post the other day about how the world population just past 6,666,666,666. 80 years ago it was about 2 billion. In the last 10 years it has increased by just under 1 billion people.

This is a great video for seeing how fast the world is changing.
